When couples start planning each part of a wedding

Dress interest peaks now, rings in December, decor not until May. What our Pinterest trend data says about the order to plan in.

Plan a wedding in the order the decisions constrain each other: date and guest count, then venue, then the things the venue fixes. Attire and rings can run alongside from day one. Stationery, decor, and table styling come last, and every one of them takes longer than a couple expects.

That order is not just tradition. Our own Pinterest trend data shows when couples actually turn their attention to each part of a wedding, and the calendar it draws is unevenly spaced. Some categories are at their annual high right now. Others do not crest for another eight months. For the tasks themselves in order, see a 12-month wedding planning timeline.

A note on the figures below. They are relative interest on a 0-100 scale, where 100 is that category's own historical high. They describe attention, not people and not volume.

When does dress shopping actually peak?

This week. Wedding dresses sit at 52 today and peak the week of 2026-09-10, which is now. Of the eight wedding categories we track, it is the only one already at its high point.

That matters for practical reasons rather than sentimental ones. Bridal appointments, alteration slots, and made-to-order lead times all compress when demand arrives at once. A dress ordered in September against a wedding the following summer is comfortable. The same dress ordered in February is a rush fee.

Why do rings peak in December?

Engagement and wedding rings sit at 68 today, the highest current reading of any category, and peak on 2026-12-17, fourteen weeks out. The holidays are proposal season, and they always have been.

If you are already engaged, this is less about your ring and more about who you are competing with. Couples who get engaged in December start enquiring in January, which is when venues, photographers, and bands fill their best dates. Anything you can book before the new year, book before the new year.

Wedding gifts follow close behind, peaking on 2027-01-07 from a current 28. Registry attention arrives right after the engagements do.

When does stationery start to matter?

Later than it should. Wedding stationery sits at 64 today and does not peak until 2027-05-13, thirty-five weeks away. That is the crowd's timing, and for a summer wedding the crowd is late.

Invitations want ordering roughly three months before they go in the post, and save the dates want sending well before that. The full countdown is laid out in when to send save the dates and invitations. Read it against the peak above and the gap is obvious: most couples start thinking about paper in the month they should already be posting it.

Wedding clothing, which covers guest attire and everything worn that is not the dress, sits at 50 and peaks on 2027-01-14. Guests start thinking about clothes in January, which is a useful thing to know if your invitations go out in the spring: by the time they arrive, your guests have already been wondering.

Why does everything feel late in spring?

Because four categories crest within a week of each other. Wedding table decor, wedding decor, and wedding ceremony decor all peak on 2027-05-20, currently at 58, 58, and 51. Stationery peaks the week before. Wedding clothing peaks earlier, on 2027-01-14, from a current 50.

So the spring bottleneck is real and it is structural. Everything a couple can defer, they do defer, and it all lands in the same fortnight alongside every other couple who deferred it. Florists, printers, and rental companies are answering the same questions from everyone at once.

There is a second effect worth naming. When a category peaks, the inspiration a couple sees is at its most uniform, because everyone is looking at the same things in the same fortnight. Decisions made in the quiet months tend to look more like the couple making them.

The counter is unglamorous: do the cheap, reversible decisions early. Guest list, wording, website copy. None of them require money, all of them unblock the expensive decisions, and doing them in January costs nothing except an evening.

A working order

  1. Date range and rough guest count. Everything else hangs on these.
  2. Venue and date, locked. Ceremony and reception together.
  3. Photographer, catering, music. The suppliers who book out first.
  4. Attire. Start now if you can, given where dress interest already sits.
  5. Guest list by household, then the website. See the wedding website checklist for what actually needs to be on it.
  6. Save the dates, then invitations, then RSVP deadline.
  7. Decor, table styling, and the small details. Last, deliberately.

Steps five and six are where most of the guest-facing work sits, and they are the ones that generate the most questions later. What guests go looking for once they have your invitation is covered in what wedding guests look up before they reply.

Common questions

What should I plan first after getting engaged?

Set a date range and a guest count first, because both decide the venue, and the venue decides almost everything after it. Dress shopping and rings can start immediately, since neither depends on a signed contract.

When do people start looking at wedding dresses?

Interest in wedding dresses peaks in early September on our own Pinterest trend data, with the current week of 2026-09-10 sitting at the top of the year. If you are shopping now, you are shopping alongside the largest group of the year.

When should I order invitations?

Order roughly three months before you want them in the post. Interest in wedding stationery does not peak until mid-May, which is late for anyone marrying that summer, so working ahead of the crowd is the easier path.

Why does wedding planning feel late in spring?

Because decor, table decor, ceremony decor, and stationery all peak within a week of each other in May. Four categories crest at once, suppliers are busiest, and any decision deferred from winter lands in that same fortnight.

Do engagement rings really peak in December?

Interest in engagement and wedding rings peaks on 2026-12-17 in our Pinterest trend data, and sits at 68 out of 100 today. December proposals are the reason the following January is the busiest month for venue enquiries.

The one part of the list you can finish in an evening is the website, and it is the part that quietly absorbs the questions from every other stage. Our live demo shows what guests see when it is done properly.
